About Us

The Focus Film Festival is celebrating its 11th anniversary next year at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Focus is a non-profit, student-run, four-day guerrilla filmmaking competition.

The goal of the Focus Film Festival is to bring aspiring filmmakers together for a few days of intense production, as well as serve as a link between the academic and professional world of filmmaking.

The screening for the festival showcases all  short films created by the groups and awards different films for their skill and creativity. The screening is open to both the Queen’s and Kingston community.

How to Participate

Participants do not need to be a  film major or know how to make a film to join! Our goal is to bring together aspiring filmmakers and interested participants together to nurture creativity and create lasting memories.

The Focus Film Festival invites any Queen’s University student to come to our annual information night (see  our announcements section). No previous experience is required and it is not necessary to have your own equipment.*

On the festival weekend there will be a kick-off meeting where the participants will be assigned groups and where the theme of the festival will be revealed. From that moment on, the festival begins!

All festival submissions will be screened at a public showcase. Industry professionals will be brought in to judge the work and award different skills and creativity. The winners will be awarded at the showcase.

Before the screening, the judges will be available for a Q and A workshop with  festival participants in order tell their own stories, find out about their career path, and help to answer any questions participants may have about the film and television industry.

Participants who have their own equipment or software will be encouraged to use it when possible within their own group. (Camera, editing software, etc).
